Pretty Little Things by Teresa Mummert

My mind is completely blank when I try to think of an adequate way to begin this review. The book was astonishing and not at all what I had thought it would be – well what was I expecting – Christ knows.

But one thing I do know is that it was most definitely not Colin Blakely!

He has to be one of the most alpha of all Alpha men, he has it all and to top it all he has a love for Annie that knows no bounds. His love for Annie is complete and the lengths that he has gone to, to keep her out of harm’s way, even from himself are extraordinary.

The book is dark and nothing is as it seems but it proves that everything happens for a reason. The story covers everything in a series of events that take the reader at breakneck speed through the dynamic between Colin and Annie, there history and the intended future.

The connection between the pair is intriguing and it grabs you from the very first page. It took me a little while to fully understand the dynamic between the pair of them. I mean Annie (Annabel) is your typical teenager in many respects, a bit of quick mouth and attitude to go with it – especially when directed at Colin but she is a good girl really as we can surmise from her relationship with Jacob.

Colin – OMG don’t get me started, I may never stop.

His complexity is staggering, how the boy survives day to day carrying the pain that he harbours inside him beggars belief but it is testament to the abilities of the author that not only do we get to experience the hell that has been his life through his eyes but we get to feel an empathy for a little boy who was born and lived with such cruelty and manipulation that it is without doubt a miracle that he is in any way sane. He has loved Annie from the minute he laid eyes on her and she is his to protect and with everything he has will protect her even if that means he has to protect her from himself.

I found the dynamic between them amazing, they knew that they were bonded together but the chemistry they had couldn’t be forced and despite the dance they did around each other they belonged together.

The book showed a raw and damaged side of life. And Colin encapsulated both sides of the coin. He was both damaged and raw but because of the actions of others – he was a victim as much as Annie and to that end my heart bleeds for him.

“It is my job to protect you. I never had a choice. Just like I had no choice but to love you. I will spend every second of the rest of my life undoing every wrong that was brought upon you.”

The story was intense and emotional and full of twists and turns that kept me guessing right up to the end and I do mean to the very end!

I hope that we hear more from Colin and Annie, I would love to think that we have begun a journey with them and that we will see their happy ending through to the conclusion.

I would also like to get a bit more from Jacob; it looked like he had a story that would be well worth reading.
